🌱 The Beginning

I’m Sreeraman, a tech entrepreneur in Mumbai. One day, while my parents were visiting, they mentioned an Ati Rudram Mahayajna, the 14,641 recitations of the Sri Rudram, taking place at a nearby temple. Surprisingly, the chairman of the temple’s celebration committee is N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata, and the Chief Patron was S. Ramadorai, former CEO of TCS! That caught my attention. If leaders of that calibre could make time for spirituality, I figured I could too. My parents added, almost casually, that along with the priests, even the locals of all age were chanting. Then came the look from my dad that meant, “So, why don’t you learn?”. I’ve never been one to turn down a challenge, especially when it involves Shiva, my favourite deity. And that’s how I found myself stepping into what would become the toughest knowledge quest of my life…

⛰️ The Challenges

I’d only passively the Rudram during Upanayanam ceremonies, without knowing the first line, let alone the difference between Namakam and Chamakam. Armed with Google, I found a few renditions, but even after listening to them repeatedly, I could barely get past the first line. Every element seemed challenging: most phonetic English scripts were either too casual and “spoken” to be precise, or so rigidly in IAST that they felt unnatural for chanting unless you were trained in it. Finding something in between was harder than I expected. Add to that the search for a guru, online or nearby, the struggle to carve out daily practice time, and the need to make it a habit that would actually stick.

✨ The Transformation

My early challenges came from three things: greed (for time), pride (of being a fast learner), and the desire for quick wins. I dove straight into learning a timeless Vedic chant that even seasoned scholars take years to master. Looking back, it was both silly and naive. So, I turned to what I’ve practised for over 20 years; applying first principles. I began by understanding the concept and meaning of the Rudram, then broke the monumental task into one line at a time. Using self-notes, audio clips, a disciplined self-paced routine, and plenty of repetition, I managed to recite the entire Namakam in about 40 days. (Not to be mistaken for expertise or the equivalent of a Vedic scholar.) This blend of method and persistence is what you’ll find distilled into this learning platform.

🚩 The Vision

If someone like me, a modern-day, average person with limited exposure to Sanskrit can learn it in six weeks, I’m certain there are many more eager souls who can benefit from this most powerful Vedic chant to one of the most beloved, all-encompassing deities: Lord Shiva.
